Microsoft Is Turning Skype Into a Glorified Mobile App

SKYPE BROKEN

(FEDERALJACK)   Microsoft has killed Skype (in a manner of speaking), and dealt a major blow to the alternative media as a whole in doing so. After December 2013 they are pretty much turning Skype into a mobile app.

From Skype itself:

“The Desktop API was created in 2004 and it doesn’t support mobile application development. We have, therefore, decided to retire the Desktop API in December 2013.”

It goes on to say:

“Any broadcast solution built on the Desktop API will stop working after December 2013. This change won’t affect those broadcasters who are using video capture cards to record Skype video calls. We’re currently working on an official solution for our broadcast partners. However, we have nothing to communicate at this time. Feel free to contact us for further information.”

This kills call recorders as well as all other third party applications people have been using with Skype for years. I use a call recording application for my off air interviews. Think about the litany of people I won’t be able to easily interview now until I find an alternative, and pay more money out of pocket for a new call recording program to work with whatever new platform I use to broadcast. Make no mistake, this is going to effect all of you who use it to broadcast. Microsoft has destroyed a perfectly fine product. Time for a new platform. We must adapt and overcome.
